ABOUT US

About ABC

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national association representing 23,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms in 79 chapters across the United States. ABC's membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry and is comprised primarily of firms that perform work in the industrial and commercial sectors of the industry.

ABC was founded in 1950 when seven contractors gathered in Baltimore, Md. to create an association based on the shared belief that construction projects should be awarded on merit to the most qualified and responsible low bidders. Their courage and dedication to the merit shop philosophy spread rapidly, and within time, ABC became the fastest-growing association in the United States.

Today, ABC is recognized as one of the leading organizations representing America's business community and the U.S. construction industry.

Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. is the voice of the Merit Shop in the construction industry. We assume the responsibility of making that voice heard.

Mission

Associated Builders and Contractors will provide the best training, government and legal representation, and programs to ensure members a competitive advantage, add value to the industry's clients, promote a safe work place and enhance the lives of the industry's employees.

ABC Tennessee

The beginning of this unique chapter of ABC started in 1976 when a group of contractors came together to get involved in this prestigious organization. The organization was chartered in 1977. The original charter members were Tom Kesterson (Brownlee and Kesterson Construction), Joe Zappa (Joseph Construction), Bob Kryder (Knox Glass), Bill Headrick (Southern Cast Stone), and Jerry Lynn (Construction Engineers). This chapter has succeeded in providing a unifying force amongst area businesses by connecting them and enabling them to in turn work to build better communities in the East Tennessee area. In 2003, ABC East Tennessee Chapter received recognition for 5% overall growth in one year. In 2005, they also received the Charles A. Mullan award for membership growth.

There are many different venues that this chapter has utilized to better connect businesses and improve communities. Nearly year-round there are events and classes offered to their deserving members. The main benefits of ABC East Tennessee Chapter are: business development/public relations services, legislative relations, safety training programs, education training, business socials, and fringe benefits

Vision

Associated Builders and Contractors will lead the construction industry, promoting and defending the guiding principles of the merit shop and free enterprise whereby anyone can succeed solely on merit.
